POSITION SUMMARY & RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the President, this individual will be part of the Statewide Executives team, representing Statewide members across California. This includes the Senior Leadership Team and the Extended Leadership Team, which are responsible for day-to-day operations, strategic direction, and the overall success of the union. The Chief of Staff is an executive-level position that supports the strategic direction of SEIU United Service Workers West by overseeing all administrative, financial, and operational activities for the organization’s President.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: This position will manage the union’s senior staff team and will help transform SEIU USWW into a more member-driven and militant union that can carry out industry-wide strikes and large-scale political education programs. Applicants must have extensive experience driving field programs and running multi-component campaigns.
Examples of Duties:
- Acts as a strategic advisor to the President and senior management team.
- Works with staff directors in overseeing DRIVING the union's daily operations, including staff management and program development
- Act as a key thought partner, brainstorming and identifying solutions to challenges
- Manage a variety of long-term, cross-organizational projects and campaigns
- Participates with the President and senior management team in strategic planning, policy development, and decision-making.
- Ensures timely and effective completion of projects and initiatives of the Senior Management team.
- Works with the HR Director and researches and recommends new and revised policies and practices based on Human Resources needs.
- Creates and maintains systems and processes to streamline operations.
- Maintains accurate confidential files and data records.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS: Graduation from an accredited college or university in relevant field or equivalent experience in labor & community organizing that would provide for the following knowledge of, skills & abilities.
- 3+ years in a business or executive management role
- Extensive experience in successful base-building union organizing campaigns.
- Experience working on campaigns with a labor union.
- Track record of organizing and directing multiple teams and departments
- Highly experienced with Excel or Google Sheets for reporting and analytics
- Excels at building relationships and networks; influences others to achieve outcomes
- High-level management experience, such as knowledge of the practices, processes, systems, and players in the labor movement and familiarity with the union movement, political landscape, and community activism scene.
- Proven commitment to social and economic justice and improving the lives of working people.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in fast-paced and diverse team environment.
- Ability to effectively plan and implement work and manage time, as part of a team and individually.
- Demonstrated ability to clearly convey information and ideas both verbally and in writing across audiences.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to travel to other work sites in California, ability to work extended and irregular hours, and work remotely
- Valid drivers’ license, use of a car for work, and specified automobile insurance coverage are mandatory
- Physical Requirements
- Bilingual English/Spanish (written & verbal) is highly preferred, but not required.
