Grievance Representative

The Union has approximately 450 staff in sixteen offices from Boston to Miami. 32BJ SEIU represents over 185,000 property service workers including janitors, security officers, airport workers, and food service employees in 11 states and Washington, DC. 32BJ is an affiliate of SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, which has 2 million members dedicated to raising industry standards and making life better for all working families and communities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complete intake interviews with members, including coordination of interpreters when necessary.
  • Conduct investigatory and grievance meetings in person when necessary in the following airports: JFK, LGA, EWR, DCA,IAD,BWI,PHL & BOS.
  • Review and interpret multiple collective bargaining agreements; identify issues and contract violations.
  • File grievances, investigate assigned cases ensuring accurate assessment of issues, documentation of facts, maintenance of timelines, and enforcement of contract.
  • Represent union members at grievance hearings; prepare members to present their story in an efficient and coherent manner.
  • Coordinate with the Union Representatives and Member Leaders on all aspects of the grievance process.
  • Negotiate solutions with employers and management representatives while adhering to CBA language and standards.
  • Work closely with field organizers in assigned turfs across at least 3 of our districts to proactively identify patterns in grievances and support field organizers in proposing solutions to deeper problems.
  • Maintain CRM Grievance database for notes, updates, escalation of grievance, settlements and closure based on contract deadlines.
  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with management counterparts to negotiate the best outcome for members and union.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will bring previous labor union experience. A demonstrated commitment to social justice is required. While no one candidate will possess every quality outlined for this position, the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional skills and personal attributes:

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage and prioritize work subject to deadlines in a dynamic environment, both individually and as a team member.
  • Demonstrated commitment working for social justice.
  • Computer skills include MS Office/Outlook and ability to learn union tools including field app and database.
  • Bilingual in Amharic/English, Arabic/English or Spanish/English both verbal and written preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position is a full-time position.
  • This position is a combination of office/field based, with many required visits to airports to meet with members as well as office days.
  • This position requires traveling to worksites/events and participating in events, marches and demonstrations.
  • This position may require hours outside normal business hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The salary for this position is $64,350 per year. 32BJ offers a full benefits package that includes a fully employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan, for full-time employees and their qualified dependents. We offer a car stipend (for qualified employees), and retirement benefits, including both a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. 32BJ offers paid time off including three weeks’ vacation, eleven holidays, twelve sick days, and four personal days. The Union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
