Communications Coordinator
Based in Tallahassee, FL
The Communications Coordinator reports to and collaborates with the Director of Politics and Public Policy. The position is a salaried, overtime exempt position that is covered under a union collective bargaining agreement with substantial benefits and job security. The salary range is $50,000 – $55,000 based on qualifications and experience. Medical coverage with low out-of- pocket expenses, dental, eye care; generous personal leave; retirement benefits and accrued leave buy-outs. Total compensation package valued at over $75,000. The position is based in the Florida AFL-CIO office in Tallahassee, FL.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Work with the President and the Director of Politics and Public Policy to lead the development, organization and implementation of the Florida AFL-CIO strategic communications plans and infrastructure.
- Work with the Director of Politics and Public Policy to create, review, and write all publications disseminated by the organization.
- Serve as a secondary spokesperson for the organization, as directed by the President or the Director of Politics and Public Policy.
- Develop and maintain close relationships with statewide and local press and lead the planning and execution of major press events.
- Compile research, briefs, presentations for local and statewide issue, legislative and electoral campaigns.
- Work in cooperation with the National AFL-CIO Communications Department to plan state media events, press and digital campaigns.
- Maintain and develop content for the organization’s website and blog.
- Lead in the development of and implementation of organizational and campaign email and texting campaigns.
- Lead in the development and design of digital content and managing engagement across numerous social media channels.
- Alongside the Director of Politics and Public Policy, coordinate with the Field Director and field staff to develop member experiences for use in local and statewide activities.
- Work with the Field Director and field staff to help build online networks and social media for the Central Labor Councils.
- Work with vendors to create promotional print, digital, mail, and video content.
- Present media and communications trainings for union members, Central Labor Councils, local unions, and allied organizations.
- Drafting and placement coordination of op-eds, Letters-to-the Editor, and other earned media placements/features.
- All other duties as assigned by the President or the Director of Politics and Public Policy.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in communications or another related field.
- 3-5 years of related work experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Excellent writing, verbal, and analytical skills
- Design and implement digital and social media strategies
- Basic/Intermediate graphics design abilities
- Knowledge of social media platforms with experience in establishing and growing engagement on those platforms
- Knowledge of paid media strategy and experience creating effective paid media
- Experience in framing messaging for specific audiences and creating materials for those audiences
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines
- Must be able to work independently in a fast-paced, professional environment and have a professional demeanor
- Able to demonstrate considerable knowledge of Florida legislative and electoral processes
- Proficient in the production of digital, print, and video materials
- Experience working with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, WordPress, NGP VAN/LAN and Action Network.
Preferred skills:
Ability to speak and write Spanish.
