Homecare Lead Organizer

Role: The Homecare Lead Organizer is a key leadership role in SEIU Healthcare PA to help build the homecare workers union across PA. The responsibility of the Homecare lead organizer is to drive the organizing and mobilization plan for homecare workers across PA who are fighting for good jobs and a better homecare system and to help develop and support a team of organizers.

Duties and Responsibilities:
A Lead Homecare Organizer performs a wide range of duties, which may vary according to the needs of the campaign and strategy. Examples of those duties and responsibilities, not intended to be exhaustive nor all inclusive, are listed below:
- Lead workers into struggle so that they learn from their experience that their power comes from collective action.
- Identify, recruit, and develop member leaders to lead coworkers and help lead the union’s programs and campaigns including: political advocacy, participation in skill -based training program, an advocacy around care delivery systems
- Developing year to year strategy and organizing plans build a strong union of homecare workers.
- Develop and support activities, struggles, and campaigns of other workers, the union and allies in the wider movement for social and economic justice.
- Hiring, developing, and leading a team of homecare organizers to effectively carry out the goals of UHWP and SEIU Healthcare PA to build worker power, a better healthcare system and a more just world.
Scope: A Lead Homecare Organizer will lead a team of organizers, will work closely with the Homecare Director, and is a key leader across our statewide union. They must be able to effectively organize their time and develop and carry out a field plan independently and with minimum supervision. They must also be able to provide direction and leadership to a team of homecare organizers and work collaboratively with other staff across SEIU Healthcare PA.
Key Qualifications: A successful Lead Homecare Organizer will be able to:
- Listen to workers’ issues, effectively lay out the vision of the union, move workers to overcome their reservations and obstacles, and inspire and motivate them to get involved in union campaigns and activities.
- Identify and develop leaders, workers and staff, including the ability to develop an organizing conversation, lead role plays, develop team meetings, debrief conversations etc.
- Take initiative and be creative in developing campaigns and engagement of homecare workers.
- Cultivate productive and respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Display sound organizational skills to plan and manage and prioritize work and balance conflicting demands subject to deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment.
- Work independently and carry out assigned responsibilities in a competent and professional manner in keeping with the union’s overall goals and expectations.
- Proficiency with basic technology related to organizing.
Qualifications:
- Experience as a union organizer or other similar organizing/campaign experience.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- High level of facilitation and leadership skills.
- Exercises high level of autonomous decision making and problem-solving skills
- Strong planning skills, ability to discern priorities, and manage multiple responsibilities.
Work Expectations:
- Residency in PA
- A valid driving license and working vehicle
- Willingness to travel (mileage reimbursement and lodging provided when working away from home)
- Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including weekend and evenings and holidays as needed for the work.
Compensation: Competitive salary range of $67,000 to $88,000 depending on experience and benefits package including fully paid health insurance, defined-benefit pension, optional 401(k), etc.
