Community Organizer
Based in Northern Virginia
Job Purpose
This is a full-time bargaining unit position to work on an organizing campaign based in Northern Virginia. FCFT’s Organizer (Parent and Community) works to engage these community leaders and activists in FCFT collective actions to improve school culture/climate and the functioning of joint decision-making on teaching and learning issues. This work is grassroots on the ground organizing. Union, community, or political organizing experience preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Organize and mobilize workers
- Attend regular meetings with supervisors and team to discuss progress and plan activities
- One-on-one visits, site visits, meetings, and other interaction with members and potential members
- Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a regular basis
- Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required
- Take direction on activities to grow membership and accomplish goals
Qualifications / Expectations
- Willing to work long and irregular hours
- Dedicated to social and economic justice, and public education access
- Be in possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population
- Must have strong communications skills
- Must be competent in basic computer/web functions, and social media platforms
- Be motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented
- Be able to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from the Public Affairs Director and Organizing Director.
- At least 1 year of previous labor and/or community organizing
- A background in public education issues is preferred
- Experienced in community, student, political, or labor activism is a plus
Salary and Benefits
The starting salary of this position is $60,000 including paid time off, sick leave, health benefits, dental benefits, travel, and expense reimbursements.
