Lead Organizer
Based in Northern Virginia
Job Purpose
This is a management-level position to work on an organizing campaign based in Northern Virginia. FCFT’s Lead Organizer works to engage organizers and workers in FCFT actions to improve school culture/climate and the functioning of joint decision-making on teaching and learning issues. Union, community, or political organizing experience preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Proven ability to hire, mentor, motivate, assess, evaluate, discipline, and coordinate all aspects of the organizing program including regular check-ins and development of organizer work plans
- Conduct field campaign briefs and debriefs with staff
- Assess and evaluate staff performance
- Provide high levels of strategic input
- Evaluate campaign status, including but not limited to messaging, numeric assessments interpretation and campaign field needs to the Executive Director
- Oversee a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizers, leaders, and activists
- Organize and mobilize workers
- Attend regular meetings with other supervisors to discuss progress and plan activities
- One-on-one visits, site visits, meetings, and other interaction with members and potential members
- Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a regular basis
- Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required
- Take direction on activities to grow membership and accomplish goals
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications / Expectations
- Willing to work long and irregular hours
- Dedicated to social and economic justice, and public education access
- Be in possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population
- Must have strong communications skills
- Must be competent in basic computer/web functions, and social media platforms
- Be motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented
- Be able to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from the Executive Director
- At least 1 year of previous labor and/or community organizing
- A background in public education issues is preferred
- Experienced in community, student, political, or labor activism is a plus
Salary and Benefits
The starting salary of this position is $72,000 including paid time off, sick leave, health benefits, dental benefits, travel, and expense reimbursements. This is a management level position with the ability to hire, discipline, and assess bargaining unit employees and thus is not part of a bargaining unit.
