Annual Salary Range: $93,121 – $113,681

SEIU Local 620 represents 3,000+ public sector employees across 32 public agencies in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. Members include administrative staff, IT, maintenance, harbor patrol, parks & recreation, engineers, and more. Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Field Representative serves as a strong advocate for union members, providing representation and support in grievances and workplace disputes. Acting as a lead negotiator, this role ensures fair agreements that align with members’ interests. The position also focuses on member recruitment, retention, education, and engagement to foster solidarity and workplace empowerment.

Essential Functions:
Individual Representation & Advocacy:

  • Represent members in grievance proceedings, disciplinary hearings, civil service appeals, and workplace disputes, ensuring fair treatment.
  • Conduct investigations, gather evidence, and prepare cases to protect members' rights.
  • Interpret and apply labor laws and MOUs to ensure compliance.
  • Provide guidance on workplace issues, policies, and procedures.

Member Education & Engagement:

  • Educate members on collective bargaining agreements, labor laws, and civil service regulations.
  • Facilitate meetings, workshops, and outreach efforts to strengthen member involvement.
  • Keep members informed about union activities and initiatives.

Recruitment & Retention:

  • Implement strategies to recruit and retain members through outreach and engagement.
  • Identify potential leaders and connect them with steward training opportunities.
  • Conduct follow-ups to address member concerns and foster commitment to the union.

Board & Council Involvement:

  • Review agendas for board and council meetings to identify issues affecting union members.
  • Prepare and deliver public comments when necessary to represent union interests.

Negotiation & Bargaining:

  • Serve as the lead negotiator during bargaining sessions.
  • Develop strategies and proposals to secure improvements in wages, benefits, and working conditions.
  • Coordinate with bargaining teams and leadership to ensure effective communication and member involvement.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Combination of relevant training, education, and experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in labor relations, field representation, or a related role (preferably in the public sector or a unionized environment).
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Relations, Political Science, Public Administration, or related field (preferred).
  • Availability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, and travel as needed.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong understanding of labor laws, collective bargaining principles, and civil service regulations.
  • Experience representing members in grievances and disciplinary hearings.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for advocacy and engagement.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to union values, solidarity, and social justice.

License Requirements: Must have a valid California Driver’s license and reliable vehicle at the time of appointment.
