The Connecticut State University American Association of University Professors (CSU-AAUP) is the labor union for some 3,100 members at the four regional Connecticut State Universities: Central, Eastern, Southern and Western. CSU-AAUP union members are coaches, counselors, librarians, and teaching faculty, who fight together to advance faculty capacity to govern their own workplace, improve working conditions, and expand access to quality public higher education.

We are hiring a full-time Organizer, based in Connecticut, with an ideal but negotiable start date of August 11. Under the direction of CSU-AAUP leadership, they will be responsible for building relationships with members, recruiting new members, identifying new leaders and supporting their development, and helping to solve workplace problems.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, build relationships with, train and bring together workplace leaders to grow organizing committees and other union leadership
  • Grow membership in the union through strategic work with organizing committees and other union leaders
  • Conduct trainings on organizing fundamentals, power analysis, and direct action
  • Mobilize members for training, rallies and direct actions
  • Advance equity of groups underrepresented in union spaces such as part-time faculty
  • Support elected union leadership in strategic decision-making and carrying out union-wide initiatives, actions and issue campaigns.
  • Maintain accurate records of organizing work and member engagement, including on organization database.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent familiarity with higher education workplaces
  • Demonstrated commitment to I don’t unionism and to social and economic justice
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including:
    • Curiosity about people
    • Good listening skills
    • Ability to respectfully challenge people to take action
  • Ability to work accountably within a team without daily supervision
  • Personally organized with ability to multitask
  • Track record of persistence through obstacles
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic computer literacy, including proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom and Google Documents
  • Willingness to travel to all parts of Connecticut for meetings and to participate in CSU-AAUP related campaigns or events
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as required
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a car

Preferred:

  • Union organizing experience
  • Experience in higher education
  • Familiarity with Connecticut state politics and legislative procedure
  • Demonstrated success engaging previously unorganized people, communities or workplaces

Salary and Benefits:
This position is in the CSU-AAUP staff bargaining unit, and its basic conditions of work will conform to that collective bargaining agreement, which is currently being renegotiated. CSU-AAUP offers paid time off, health, vision and dental insurance, a healthcare savings account, and an employer funded 401(k) retirement plan. Starting salary is in the range of $55,000 to 60,000, depending on relevant experience.
