About Build the Base / Grow the Movement:
Build the Base, Grow the Movement (BTB/GTM) is a groundbreaking training program that works with workers centers, unions, community organizations, immigrant rights groups, and worker justice networks to greatly expand their base of leadership and active members.
Our distributed organizing approach shifts significant roles from staff to membership to leadership -- enabling organizations to absorb and maintain a dynamic connection with many more members. With volunteer leaders leading turf-based teams (workplace, building, neighborhood, district, etc.) the organization is able to scale up a base that continually grows in agency and collective power.
Build the Base trains organizations to implement a set of practices that fuel organizational growth, that are tailored to organizational needs, are designed from our 16 hours of core training curriculum, paired with intensive follow-up coaching.
Recent projects include:
- A multi-year project partnering with a large union supporting organizers to build 22 district teams led by 100 member-leaders using distributed leadership to engage thousands of members
- Partnered with a funder to support eight worker centers in the South to design and implement distributed organizing systems to build out their membership structures through monthly day-long trainings with specific exercises and to do’s,followed by six months of coaching
