The Union has approximately 450 staff in sixteen offices from Boston to Miami. 32BJ SEIU represents over 185,000 property service workers including janitors, security officers, airport workers, and food service employees in eleven states and Washington, DC. 32BJ is an affiliate of SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, which has two million members dedicated to raising industry standards and making life better for all working families and communities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Field Representative is based in New Jersey and is responsible for member engagement, leader development, representation, contract campaigns, and negotiations of single-site collective bargaining agreements. This position reports to the New Jersey Staff Director and/or the Lead Field Representative.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Identifying and developing Shop Stewards and member leaders across assigned worksites.
  • Expanding the activist base by engaging members in district-wide and union-wide initiatives.
  • Developing and executing worksite- and company-level contract campaigns.
  • Supporting organizing campaigns among non-union workers within our industries.
  • Connecting member leaders to broader social and economic justice movements.
  • Serving as the lead negotiator in Residential contract negotiations (training and coaching will be provided for those with limited negotiation experience).

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can lead, motivate, and inspire members while working independently and under general supervision.

While no candidate is expected to possess every qualification listed, strong candidates will demonstrate many of the following skills and attributes:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement and broader social justice work.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to build respectful, effective relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Working knowledge of collective bargaining and contract administration.
  • Experience drafting proposals, leading negotiations, and running contract campaigns.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in basic administrative and computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, email, and database tools.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This is a full-time position based in the Newark, NJ office that often requires working beyond standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays. The role involves regular travel to worksites throughout New Jersey, with occasional overnight travel to other East Coast locations. A valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle with insurance are required. The position also requires participation in marches, demonstrations, and events lasting 3–4 hours, as well as the ability to transport and set up at least 15 pounds of equipment and navigate stairs.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The salary range for Field Representatives starts at $66,829. 32BJ offers a generous benefits package that includes a fully employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan (for full-time employees and their qualified dependents) and retirement benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. 32BJ offers paid time off including three weeks’ vacation, eleven holidays, twelve sick days, and, after the first year of service, four personal days. A weekly travel allowance is also provided. The union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
