ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Director of Bargaining and Employer Relations-NY Metro plays a pivotal role in advancing the Union’s collective bargaining efforts in the greater NYC area. The Director works closely with Union officers to coordinate bargaining strategies, public policy, and benefit fund issues. The role encompasses leading negotiations for key area-wide collective bargaining agreements, serving as a union trustee on benefit funds, advising on policy and legislation as it relates to bargaining, and managing employer relationships. The position reports to the President and Director of New York Metro Divisions. The position is based in 32BJ’s headquarters in Manhattan.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Develop and coordinate bargaining strategies across multiple agreements/geographies
  • Oversee bargaining preparation including:
    • Costing of proposals
    • Gathering and analyzing information from members and employers
    • Identifying benefits, legal and policy issues related to negotiations 
    • Drafting of proposals
  • Draft proposals, memorandum of agreement, integrated collective bargaining agreements, member communications, and oversee the work of others who perform these functions
  • In conjunction with 32BJ officers, serve as key liaison to employers on bargaining, grievances, and other representation matters, as well policy and legislation 
  • Along with 32BJ’s President, serve as lead negotiator for area-wide agreements
  • Coordinate with other Union staff, employers and benefit funds on contract implementation
  • Assist in resolving institutionally-significant grievances
  • Train/develop Union staff with respect to bargaining
  • Serve as a Union trustee on benefit funds

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

  • A minimum of 8 years of collective bargaining/representation experience, including with respect to benefit fund matters 
  • A law degree or deep familiarity with legal issues related to bargaining and organizing, including labor law and ERISA
  • A demonstrated commitment to the advancement of the rights of working people 
  • Employer relations experience
  • Experience working with union members, managing a bargaining committee, and/or union membership development
  • Ability to travel throughout the New York Region
  • Strong drafting skills
  • Strategic planning skills with respect to bargaining and related campaigns
  • Clear and effective communication skills, both internal and external

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The salary for this role’s range is between $145K – $160K annualized. 32BJ provides a generous benefits package that includes a fully employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan, for full-time employees and their qualified dependents. We offer retirement benefits, including both a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. The Union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
