Senior Field Director, South Central Valley

The California Federation of Labor Unions represents over 1,300 affiliate unions in California that collectively represent 2.3 million union members in trucking, retail, hospitality, and other service sector jobs, janitorial, construction, health care, local and state government, education, arts and entertainment, warehousing and logistics, manufacturing, and a variety of other sectors. The Senior Field Director will work to increase Labor’s capacity and elevate the voice of working people in the South Central Valley. This position will lead targeted organizing, political and community campaigns and work with affiliated unions, central labor councils and other stakeholders and allies.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Convene unions and stakeholders in the central valley to unify around shared goals;
- Lead strategic campaigns to support organizing, support workers and build capacity for unions;
- Compile research and analysis of the south valley region;
- Identify opportunities to build economic power in the valley for working people;
- Engage stakeholders in long-term planning and strategies;
- Coordinate outreach to unions and community on working class issues;
- Work with central labor councils and local unions to increase member mobilization around state, federal, issue and organizing campaigns;
- Partner with the UC Merced Community and Labor Center to implement grant deliverables on voter education;
- Initiate and build transformational partnerships with local leaders, academic institutions, and elected leaders.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Bilingual (written and verbal) English/Spanish candidates strongly preferred;
- Prior experience leading mobilization efforts on statewide campaigns in California or regional campaigns in Central Valley or other areas;
- Prior experience working with unions and central labor councils, including on worker organizing, engagement, and/or mobilization preferred;
- Ability to conduct needs assessment and mapping to identify grassroots organizations, faith communities, unions, and cultural groups, particularly among marginalized populations;
- 5-8+ years of relevant experience in political campaigns, union organizing, and/or community organizing;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Strong ability to speak publicly and clearly present information to groups;
- Strong attention to detail with ability to take clear direction, balance multiple tasks and prioritize time-sensitive assignments;
- Ability to excel working in fast-paced, high-pressure environments – both individually and collaborating as part of a team;
- Access to a car and ability to drive long distances.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
The annual salary for this position is $120,000. This position includes fully paid health and welfare, 401k match, vacation, holidays, and sick leave.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The position may be based out of the Central Valley or Sacramento. This individual will spend significant time in union halls, job sites, and in the field, meeting workers where they’re at and supporting the work of affiliate unions and central labor councils. There is frequent evening and weekend work. This position requires travel throughout the state of California, a driver’s license and access to a car is required.
