PreK-12 Constituency Coordinator
Based in Detroit, MI
(requires travel across the state)
AFT Michigan is seeking an experienced and energized person to join our dynamic statewide union of educators and healthcare providers as our PreK-12 Constituency Coordinator. This position will be one of three focused on our main membership constituencies: Healthcare, Higher Education, and PreK-12 Education. Our team works with approximately 100 local unions across the state to build strong locals, develop leadership, bargain and enforce contracts, organize, and work for social justice. AFT Michigan represents more than 15,000 teachers and support staff in traditional, charter, and intermediate school districts across the state.
The PreK-12 Constituency Coordinator will strengthen AFT Michigan by:
- Managing and enhancing leadership development programs and internal organizing efforts in the constituency;
- Helping develop policy priorities by bringing together leaders within our constituency committees with allies and other stakeholders in the field;
- Supporting contract campaigns and coordinating bargaining across the constituency;
- Ensuring our membership and data systems are evolving to meet the needs of the constituency;
- Identify internal and external organizing opportunities, develop and execute campaign plans in the constituency;
- Developing shared learning platforms, curriculum, and training series;
- Helping other AFT Michigan staff develop the skills to be effective organizers and educators of adults;
- Supporting skill-sharing and leadership development within networks of local leaders with similar roles across the state (e.g. unemployment advocates, community engagement coordinators, and member organizers);
- Helping local leadership teams plan and implement strategic campaigns;
- Facilitating connections between AFT Michigan leaders and potential allies and resources;
- Building a stronger AFT Michigan and labor movement; and
- Accomplishing other duties and special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Independent project management skills
- Leadership development and training ability
- Ability to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds
- Ability to listen actively and frame issues
- Knowledge of organizing strategies, collective bargaining, and contract enforcement
- Experience in unions or other social justice organizations
- Knowledge of education and labor issues
- New member organizing experience
- Engagement in the political process
- Demonstrated ability to write and speak effectively
- General computer literacy and proficiency in basic data management
- Willingness to work long hours and participate in union-wide activities
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Curriculum development and adult education experience
- Policy development and advocacy experience
- Collective bargaining and contract enforcement experience
- Internal organizing experience
Competitive salary (beginning at approximately $92,000/year) and excellent benefits commensurate with the contract between AFT Michigan and the AFT Michigan Staff Union. This position is based in Detroit but requires travel across the state.
