About The Position:
The Political Coordinator II is a key leader within the 32BJ Political Department, serving as the Union’s primary political representative in Albany and a strategic partner in shaping and executing federal political initiatives. Reporting to the Deputy Political Director, the incumbent will be lead on our state program—including legislative, electoral, and organizing campaigns. The position requires the ability to develop and execute high-level political strategies independently while collaborating with Union leadership, elected officials, and external allies to advance the interests of 32BJ members and the broader labor movement. The Political Coordinator is a major driver of the Union’s political and legislative efforts at the state level.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Legislative & Policy Advocacy: Monitor, analyze, and coordinate legislative and policy initiatives impacting 32BJ members, workers’ rights, and social justice. Assess capacity and lead the development of legislative strategies and their implementation.
  • Electoral Strategy & Campaigns: Design and oversee electoral programs at the state level, ensuring alignment with Union priorities and maximizing member engagement.
  • Member Engagement & Leadership Development: Ensure robust member involvement in all political programs. Oversee the Social Justice Leadership Academy (SJLA) and create pathways for members to take on leadership roles in advocacy and organizing.
  • Organizing & Contract Campaigns: Provide strategic political and legislative support for the Union’s contract and organizing campaigns, including defensive efforts when the Union faces threats to worksites or members.
  • Stakeholder & Ally Coordination: Serve as the Union’s primary liaison with elected officials, policymakers, and coalition partners in New York while also supporting federal advocacy efforts. Build and maintain relationships with labor and community allies to advance shared goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in labor, politics, or community organizing, with significant experience in political strategy and campaign management.
  • Deep knowledge of New York’s political and legislative landscape, with a track record of success in electoral and issue-based campaigns.
  • Experience designing and executing high-impact political, legislative, and electoral programs.
  • Proven ability to manage and develop political staff, as well as cultivate member leadership in political activism.
  • Strong communication, public speaking, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to build and sustain relationships with elected officials, labor allies, and coalition partners.
  • Other Duties as Assigned

WORK ENVIRONMENT & EXPECTATIONS:

  • This position is a full-time position, based in New York City, that occasionally requires hours outside normal business hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.
  • This position requires frequent travel to Albany and may require travel to other 32BJ jurisdictions for purposes including but not limited to political/legislative hearings and events, and participating in union events, marches and demonstrations.

Compensation:
The salary for this position is $81,895. To counter pay inequality and uphold internal parity, salaries are non-negotiable for new and current employees. Our benefits package includes employer-paid health and dental insurance for employees and their qualified dependents, as well as a pension plan. The union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the sole discretion of the manager.
