Bookkeeper & Office Manager
Based in Detroit, MI
(requires travel across the state)
AFT Michigan is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented full-charge Bookkeeper & Office Manager to manage the cycle of accounting and building maintenance duties for our organization. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, managing payroll, reconciling accounts, and working closely with management and external accountants to ensure the financial health of the organization. This position is based in our Detroit office but involves occasional travel across the state. As a member of our Membership & Information Systems Coordinator team, the Bookkeeper & Office Manager will:
- Manage the general ledger, including journal entries and month-end closings;
- Manage accounts payable (A/P) and accounts receivable (A/R) processes including billing;
- Process payroll, including related tax filings and benefit deductions using ADP Workforce Now;
- Onboard new employees;
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal and external stakeholders;
- Maintain organized and up-to-date accounting records and documentation;
- File sales tax and other regulatory filings;
- Work with external CPAs for tax preparation and audits;
- Assist with budget preparation and financial forecasting;
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and accounting standards;
- Work with contractors and vendors to ensure the building is properly maintained (landscapers, cleaners, exterminator, HVAC, irrigation, etc.).
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a full-charge bookkeeper or similar accounting role
- Proficiency using accounting software, preferably QuickBooks Online
- Strong understanding of GAAP and bookkeeping principles
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work independently and handle confidential information with integrity
- Degree in Accounting, Finance, or comparable on-the-job training experience
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Willingness to work long hours and participate in union activities
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with payroll systems (e.g., ADP, Paychex)
- Comfort manipulating data in Google Sheets and/or Microsoft Excel
- Familiarity with union-specific regulations and reporting standards
- Ability to analyze and interpret financial data to support organizational decision-making
Competitive salary (beginning at approximately $92,000/year) and excellent benefits commensurate with the contract between AFT Michigan and the AFT Michigan Staff Union.
