Organization Description:
Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 7901 represents more than 500 workers across diverse sectors, including: telecommunications, progressive nonprofits, banking, radio, print newspaper, staff unions, comic book publications, retail, and food service. 

Position Description:
CWA 7901 is seeking a full-time Organizer with a passion for social justice to build power within 7901 by organizing non-union workers, building and supporting committees, identifying and developing leaders, working with Local officers and union members to develop trainings and workshops, developing and executing plans for campaigns, and growing the Local’s Political Action Fund.

Internal organizing will also be a part of this role, and can include effectively addressing member and employer questions and problems, ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements, processing grievances, attending meetings, visiting locations, and training and utilizing stewards. A small percentage of time will be spent building out and regularly posting on 7901’s instagram account. The Organizer will work otherwise as directed. 

On-the-job training for this position is provided, with the potential to participate in District and National CWA trainings and conferences relevant to the responsibilities of the position. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Organize and recruit new members to the union both independently and in collaboration with union officers and District organizers.
  • Write and implement campaign plans for new organizing efforts.
  • Develop and implement creative organizing strategies.
  • Set up communication systems for distribution of information to members.
  • Prepare printed materials for use in organizing and community campaigns.
  • Train workers and members to interface with the media.
  • Identify, recruit, train, develop, and support stewards and worksite leaders.
  • Regularly engage members in union activities.
  • Conduct worksite visits.
  • Communicate with membership and potential members through in-person conversations, email, phone calls, text messages, and digital platforms.
  • Lead and support canvassing and issue campaigns, committees, caucuses, and working groups. 
  • Identify and develop workplace leaders.
  • Work in collaboration with 7901 officers in posting on Instagram. 
  • To meet the diverse needs of our growing membership, you will be asked to work irregular and sometimes long hours, including early mornings, late evenings, and some weekends. Your essential functions also include significant walking, including stairs; prolonged standing; occasionally carrying materials or other containers weighing up to thirty pounds for significant distances; significant driving, including intercity and night driving; frequent need to communicate in writing, via telephone, and regular computer use. Because this job is hybrid (virtual and in-person), it requires long hours in front of a computer, communicating through Zoom, and any other video conferencing.

Qualifications:

  • Live or be willing to move to the Portland Metro area.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends. 
  • Strong commitment to social justice and the labor movement. 
  • Be a self-starter with an eye for identifying necessary tasks and executing them in a timely manner.
  • Be able to create and stick to a schedule that meets the needs of membership while taking into account your personal time.
  • Be willing to do work in-person as well as online.
  • Written and oral communication skills, such as: 
    • Empathic listener
    • Persuasive Speaker/Strong Presentation Skills
    • Proven adaptability to diverse cultural environments
  • Proficient with technology including but not limited to Google Workspace, Microsoft Word, Zoom, email, text messaging, Canva Pro, ActionBuilder, ActionNetwork, and/or the ability and willingness to learn these platforms. 
  • Ability to work as a team member, as well as take individual initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.
  • Familiarity with the labor movement in Oregon. 

Salary & Benefits: 
CWA 7901 will provide a $750 monthly healthcare stipend to cover the cost of a marketplace deductible. Generous holiday and vacation policies and a monthly cell stipend will be provided. Compensation range is based on experience, $70,000 – $80,000 annually. This position has a six-month probationary period.
