Director of Organizing

Based in New Brunswick, NJ

 

Rutgers Adjunct Faculty Union, Rutgers AAUP-AFT, and United Council of Academics at NJIT represent about 10,000 faculty and staff at Rutgers and NJIT. We are actively searching for a Director of Organizing. The successful candidate would join a collaborative team of hard-working self-starters at a politically progressive local that takes social justice demands seriously and centers member-led unionism as a guiding principle. 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee implementation of all aspects of the union’s organizing agenda
  • Participate in strategic planning with union leadership, assist in developing long-term goals
  • Track and report implementation of organizing plans
  • Supervise organizing and communications staff in carrying out overall union goals and implementing detailed organizing plans
  • Support elected leadership in developing organizing strategy
  • Coordinate with member committees on union communications and messaging to support organizing
  • Provide staff support for rank-and-file union committees 
  • Coordinate with contract enforcement staff to ensure alignment of enforcement and organizing approaches
  • Coordinate with staff data managers to ensure proper tracking of organizing data and optimal use of data and tracking to support organizing goals
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to ensure that organizing is aligned with overall union goals
  • Additional duties as assigned

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Five or more years of experience in supervising staff with organizing responsibilities
  • Evidence of development and implementation of detailed, data-driven organizing plans
  • Experience in increasing membership density, and planning and executing successful contract campaigns
  • Demonstrated commitment to progressive, member-driven unionism

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in diverse, multi-site unions representing contingent and job-secure workers
  • Knowledge of public higher education institutions
  • Experience in union legislative and electoral campaigns

Salary Range: 
$120,000 – $145,000, commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits package. This position is a supervisory role. 

This is a full-time, in-person position based at our office in New Brunswick. The role reports directly to the Executive Director and involves travel to NJIT and all Rutgers campuses.
