Marketing and Communications Director

Based in Metairie, LA
(living in the South is preferred, remote position with occasional travel okay)

 

This position leads the external and internal member communications program for the Central South Carpenters Regional Council and its associated training funds, covering 11 states and over 5,000 apprentices. The incumbent will identify current members for leadership development and promote organizing, political, and advocacy efforts as it relates both to the council and their training and benefit funds. Responsibilities include creating and implementing work plans for communications, developing and implementing member communications plans, and managing social media platforms.

The role also involves authoring occasional op-eds, editing position papers, and managing ongoing print and digital communications. The incumbent will collaborate with union leadership and staff, additional communications staff, as well as external counsel to strengthen communications strategies and integrate communications into the greater operations of the regional council.

Duties: 

  • Creates campaign-style messaging to propel the CSCRC’s priorities.
  • Script social media and video content, conceptualize and produce member-focused videos. 
  • Write blog posts, emails, op-eds, and social media posts that keep members engaged and informed.
  • Writes messaging guidance and prepares content for digital, political, and organizing campaigns.
  • Produces a variety of daily and long-form written content for various digital and print platforms.
  • Writes scripts for paid marketing videos to advance the union’s priorities and campaigns.
  • Works with the video unit to write scripts and produce organizing and campaign videos.
  • Draft emails for internal and external audiences.
  • Distills social listening content for effective messaging to push the union’s priorities.
  • Helps write and edit regular Regional Council reports and convention publications. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Requirements:
Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major or extensive coursework in journalism or a substantive liberal-arts field and a minimum of five (5) years of related publications, public affairs, or communications work experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the following knowledge and skills:

Skills Requirements

  • Knowledge of communications and media operations, and in producing advocacy journalism.
  • Well-honed ability to shape messages, produce campaign-style communications, write polished social media copy, news-style articles and blogs, emails, video scripts, and reports.
  • Ability to distill data, especially to use for complex research projects; the ability to plan and translate complex information into clear prose for a variety of platforms. 
  • Fluency in the main social media platforms - Instagram, Facebook, X/Bluesky, TikTok, LinkedIn
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the labor movement, politics, and related special interests, particularly as they relate to workers in the South.
  • Ability to work under and meet tight deadlines, juggle several assignments, pay close attention to detail, and maintain accuracy. 
  • Advanced copyediting and proofreading skills are desired.
  • Ability to manage social media interns, associates, and project manage a small team.
  • The ability to communicate in Spanish, written and spoken, is beneficial.

Travel & Work Hours 

  • Travel and extended work hours, including weekends, may be required. 
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
