The Communications Workers of America (CWA) is a leading union representing workers in various industries, including telecommunications, media, and public service. With a strong commitment to advocating for workers' rights, CWA is seeking a dedicated and experienced Labor Attorney to join our District 2-13 Staff.
Position Summary:
The Labor Attorney will play a vital role in representing the interests of union members throughout Maryland, DC, Virginia, and West Virginia. This position involves providing legal counsel, representing the union in various legal matters, and supporting collective bargaining efforts. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in labor law, a passion for worker advocacy, and a commitment to advancing the rights of working individuals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice and support to union representatives, members, and staff on labor-related issues.
- Represent the union in grievance arbitrations, administrative hearings, and litigation involving labor law disputes.
- Negotiate collective bargaining agreements and assist in the implementation and interpretation of contract provisions.
- Conduct legal research and prepare legal documents, including motions, briefs, and memoranda.
- Collaborate with union leadership and staff to develop strategies for addressing legal challenges and advancing workers' rights.
- Stay informed of developments in labor law and policies that affect union members.
- Conduct training sessions for union members and staff on legal rights and labor issues.
- Participate in outreach and educational efforts to increase awareness of labor laws and workers' rights.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active member in good standing of the State Bar in Maryland, Virginia, and DC.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in labor law or related fields.
- Strong understanding of labor relations, collective bargaining, and labor arbitration processes.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex legal concepts in an understandable manner.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and build strong relationships within a union environment.
- Commitment to social justice and workers’ rights.
