Organizer / Senior Organizer

Introduction: 
The International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots, AFL-CIO (“MM&P”) is a labor union representing merchant mariners. MM&P has port offices around the United States. MM&P’s Offshore Advisory Committee (OAC) and General Executive Board (GEB) are seeking an experienced Organizer or Senior Organizer to help lead organizing and/ or campaigns and support ongoing campaigns. 
The Organizer is expected to support and lead MM&P organizing and/or bargaining campaigns. They will be responsible for developing research, analysis, and campaign strategy to advance these campaigns. The Organizer is expected to play a key role in overall campaign planning. The Organizer is also expected to mentor staff working on campaigns with them.
The Organizer will coordinate closely with the OAC and works under the direction of the OAC.
Description of duties:
- Play a central role in organizing and bargaining campaign planning, including worker, political and community elements.
 - Identify, recruit, train, and develop member leaders, empower them to effectively organize their coworkers, recruit new members, and address issues at work.
 - Conduct one-on-one interviews and complete unit mapping.
 - In partnership with union officers and member leaders, develop and implement campaign plans that engage members to win strong collective negotiations agreements.
 - In coordination with the OAC, identify strategic areas for new organizing; and, in collaboration with union officers and member leaders, build and implement new organizing campaigns.
 - Draft, edit, publish and distribute highly accurate material with close editing and direction of OAC for a wide range of internal and external audiences.
 - Support in the execution comprehensive research plans.
 - Leads, assembles resources and coordinates research components of strategic corporate campaign(s).
 - Collaborate in a broad array of research projects, including corporate and industry research.
 - Builds effective coalitions with other unions, port councils and organizations.
 - Ensure that the Organization’s resources are utilized effectively.
 - Conduct interactions with the highest integrity and discretion.
 - Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Job Qualifications:
- Experience successfully organizing a first contract campaign with a privately held company.
 - At least four years of experience with union, political or community organizing.
 - Preference for a candidate with at least five years of demonstrated comprehensive campaigning experience in new organizing and/or contract bargaining campaigns.
 - Preference for BA/BS degree or higher.
 - Preference for a candidate with experience or prior working knowledge of U.S. Merchant Marine, maritime, or port operations.
 - Strong sense of initiative and follow-through on campaign plans.
 - Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills; ability to develop work plans with limited supervision including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks.
 - Computer proficiency, including proficiency in Microsoft office suite, including excel, and google suite.
 - Ability to work through disagreement and bring people together around shared goals.
 - Creativity and strong sense of strategic thinking.
 - Demonstrated ability to design, conduct, and/or oversee an organizing campaign.
 - Ability and experience working independently on both short-term and long-term projects.
 - Demonstrated ability and experience working collaboratively in team settings, working well under pressure, and managing multiple priorities and projects effectively.
 - Experience working in a coordinating and/or convening role with multiple stakeholders in a new organizing and/or contract bargaining campaign setting, including union staff, union members/unorganized workers, and community members.
 - Ability to manage relationships in complex political and sensitive organizational situations.
 - Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships.
 - High level of individual motivation.
 - Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
 - Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills.
 - Possess a commitment to winning for workers.
 - The position may sometimes require long and extended hours and an ability to travel as needed.
 - Possess or be eligible to secure a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
 
Wages and Benefits: 
Annual Salary Range $85,000 – $120,000, commensurate with experience. This is a full-time exempt position. Employees have 17 paid holidays, are provided sick and safe leave, as well as vacation leave; pro-rated for the first year of hire. Additional employer-provided benefits include Health Insurance (premiums paid 100% by employer), and contribution to union retirement benefits.
