Medical Student and CIR Alumni Affairs Manager

Job Summary 
CIR seeks a Medical Student and CIR Alumni Affairs Manager to strengthen physician organizing within SEIU by building out a physician organizing “pipeline.” This person will do so by (a) expanding on current efforts to pre-organize medical students across the country, particularly at medical schools affiliated with CIR-organized residency programs, and (b) developing a CIR alumni program that supports organizing at CIR, Doctors Council, and Doctors United. 

What You’ll Do
Build CIR’s Medical Student Outreach Program

  • Develop a program to accomplish the following with medical students around the country:
  • Identify, engage, and activate future CIR member leaders while they are in medical school, including via connecting them to CIR campaigns at the campus, regional, and national levels. 
  • Advise the CIR Executive Committee, Executive Director and National Field Director as appropriate on the development of a medical student outreach program.
  • Increase CIR membership by educating a wide swath of US medical students about CIR.
  • Identify and work with the potential future resident leaders to host regular annual events for medical students around the country and via campaign-specific support efforts. 
  • Turn out large numbers of medical students to CIR, Doctors United, and other SEIU actions, including unity breaks, picket lines, and, if needed, large-scale mobilizations against existential threats to unions nationwide.
  • Identify and pre-organize medical students in strategic regions and medical centers. 
  • Attend/table at relevant medical student conferences/conventions (NMSA, LAMSA, SNaHP, etc.) to recruit new and diverse medical student leaders. 
  • Connect medical students who matched to CIR chapters with their staff organizers and member-leaders prior to orientation each year.
  • Plan and implement events for medical students throughout the country.
  • Prepare reports for CIR leadership as needed on medical student outreach efforts.

Develop CIR Alumni Program to Support Physician Organizing 

  • Advise the CIR Executive Committee, Executive Director and National Field Director as appropriate on the development of an alumni network.
  • Through the CIR Executive Director, engage the CIR Executive Committee in alumni outreach.
  • Build a formalized alumni network through which former CIR members remain connected and engaged with CIR and Doctors United after they complete their training.
  • Maintain a database of CIR alumni contacts and employer information.
  • Leverage this alumni network to support physician and med student organizing efforts including identifying and recruiting former CIR leaders to support campaigns. 
  • Plan and implement a fund-raising campaign from CIR alumni, including for the CIR strike fund.
  • Plan and implement regional alumni events as appropriate in support of alumni network-building & fundraising.
  • Design and implement organizing training and development plans for alumni in support of Doctors United and CIR union campaigns.
  • Prepares reports for CIR leadership as needed on the progress of this alumni network.

Supervision

  • Recruits, interviews and recommends hiring staff in the above programs
  • Directs staff as assigned in the execution of medical student and alumni outreach plans.
  • Administers appropriate disciplinary action such as developing corrective performance plans or recommends terminations if necessary.
  • Makes recommendations on appropriate allocation of resources.
  • Works with other department directors at CIR to move campaigns in support of student and alumni programs.

What Makes a Great Candidate 

  • At least two (2) years of experience as a project manager in a union or non-profit setting required.
  • At least four (4) years of community organizing experience, including two (2) leading a campaign to build power to achieve social justice, required.
  • Experience creating a fundraising strategy, including identifying and developing a relationship with potential donors. 
  • Healthcare organizing experience preferred in both public and private sectors, but not required.
  • Knowledge of union campaigns, campaign planning, development and execution processes and best practices required.
  • Understanding of physician life and training, working conditions for health care workers, relevant economic and political issues that impact physicians, preferred. 
  • Demonstrates respectful and responsible behavior, and possesses the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment. 
  • Strong planning and time management skills, ability to prioritize and develop work plans with minimal supervision including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks. 
  • Possesses excellent listening, interpersonal communication (oral/written) & problem-solving skills. 
  • Knowledge of team or organizational management and leadership skills required.
  • Ability to write campaign plans, reports and other relevant documents. 
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, lead, build strong working relationships and hold others accountable while building respect and trust. 
  • Ability to supervise, develop and manage organizing teams made up of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. 
  • Ability to critically evaluate one’s own performance and incorporate feedback into improving performance. 
  • Actively and effectively develops the skills and autonomy of staff to meet organizational needs and individual staff’s professional goals. 
  • Ability to support, model and coach staff through honest, clear and timely feedback.
  • 4-year degree, BA/BS preferred but not required
  • Familiarity with statistics, quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Fluency with Google products such as Gmail and Google Suite (docs, sheets, slides and drive); technologically proficient.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work long hours.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, and think critically.
  • Must be fully vaccinated for Covid in accordance with CDC guidelines, subject to any laws of the state in which the applicant resides.

CIR Offers 
This is a full-time, salaried, overtime-exempt position. The salary for this position is $106,000 to $115,000. Excellent benefits package including health, dental, and vision coverage with no employee contributions; generous paid leave time including four weeks’ vacation within the first calendar year of employment, paid holidays, personal days, and sick days; short and long-term disability insurance; 401(k); defined benefit pension plan; and mileage reimbursement.
