Organizing Coordinator
Based anywhere in the continental US
(ideally near a major airport)
Workers United-SEIU seeks an Organizing Coordinator for one year with the possibility of extension to join the campaign to win justice for workers at Starbucks. We are looking for a hardworking, driven, talented individual who is committed to winning campaigns for working people and is ready to immediately get to work with the Starbucks Organizing Team to win this campaign.
WHO WE ARE: Workers United - SEIU represents approximately 86,000 workers across the US and Canada. Our membership is diverse, and includes garment workers, food service workers, distribution center workers, and industrial laundry workers.
Workers United has a deeply rooted history representing garment workers. We are the former International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union, which was created in 1900 to fight sweatshops and win decent working conditions. The ILGWU was one the first U.S. unions to have a primarily female and immigrant membership.
Today we still hold close our founding values from over 100 years ago; every industry is organizable, and every worker deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. These are the same values shared by our parent union, the Service Employee International Union, with more than two million members in the United States and Canada and a leader in the fight for social justice.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Direct a team of Lead Organizers and Organizers to develop and drive organizing campaigns at union and not-yet-union Starbucks stores, supporting and building the organizing skills of Starbucks workers at those stores, building member strength and participation in union programs, across one or more geographies.
- Oversee one or more major campaign projects independently.
- Participate actively with a team of Coordinators to develop and drive national organizing and campaign strategies under the direction of the Campaign Director.
- Ensure accurate tracking and reporting on all organizing activity.
- Provides staff with direction, skills development, and accountability.
- Support with contract bargaining and dispute resolution as needed.
- Works along with campaign staff to carry out duties as needed.
Qualifications:
- Dedication to workers’ rights, racial justice, and LGBTQ+ justice.
- 3+ years of experience in labor and/or community organizing with increasing responsibility.
- Experience supervising Lead Organizers and Organizers.
- In depth knowledge of NLRA as relates to organizing campaigns.
- Adept at leading, training, and motivating others.
- Skilled at managing and meeting many and varied deadlines and ensuring staff do so.
- Excellent analytical and judgement skills as demonstrable by the ability to assess information and evidence and act strategically.
- Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to relate, establish, and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to develop varied communications tools as part of organizing campaigns.
- Skilled at managing multiple projects, meeting varied deadlines, and being flexible with changing priorities.
- Effective demonstrable oral, written and listening skills in English.
- Experienced in receiving and offering feedback openly and constructively .
- Effective facilitation and meeting management skills.
- Experience organizing independently and as part of a team.
- Working knowledge of computer programs including social media, Word, Excel, and good planning and administrative skills.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record, a working automobile, and automobile insurance.
- This position will require a substantial amount of travel throughout the year. All travel expenses will be covered.
- Physical demands: The capacity to lift up to 25 pounds is required. Able to drive, sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time. Ability to work long and irregular hours including nights and weekends.
LOCATION: Anywhere in the continental US, ideally near a major airport.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary range for this position is $77,000 – $90,000 depending on experience level. We offer a generous benefits package including fully employer-paid health, dental, vision, and life insurance and pension.
