Position Title: Part-Time Field Organizer
Location: Logan, Utah State University
Availability: 20 hours/week

CWA Local 7765, “Public Workers for the Public Good”, seeks a Part-Time Union Field Organizer with a passion for social justice to help organize a wall-to-wall union at Utah State University, in Logan, Utah.

The part-time field organizer will be accountable to the local Organizing Coordinator, their Campus Organizing Committee at USU, Local 7765’s Central Committee, and the rank-and-file membership. In this position, the field organizer will be responsible for organizing workers throughout Utah State University, developing leaders into effective member organizers, and making plans for membership recruitment, canvassing strategies, campaign development, and training. The organizer will work with the rank-and-file members to coordinate and support issue campaigns that improve material conditions for all and build unity and solidarity amongst all workers at Utah State University. 

On-the-job training for this position is provided, and the potential to collaborate with national campaigns, attend trainings, and hopefully soon attend conferences relevant to the responsibilities of the position is provided. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Recruit new members to the union in collaboration with union members and the Membership Committee
  • Communicate with membership and potential members through email, phone calls, Signal/Discord, text messages, and digital platforms
  • Implement organizing strategy and help develop campaign plans 
  • Support research and development of potential organizing projects 
  • Manage access to all relevant documents and union communication to ensure that member information is kept private and secure 
  • Support the Organizing Committee and leadership 
  • Build coalitions and maintain relationships with local activist organizations 
  • Plan, coordinate, and attend organizing events and direct actions 
  • Plan, coordinate, and attend regular membership meetings with the Organizing Committee and Local CC 
  • Design and create flyers, posters, and other forms, in collaboration with the Communications Committee 
  • Coordinate canvassing campaigns with existing membership 
  • Fill out a weekly time sheet
  • Be available for regular check-ins with the Local Organizing Coordinator 

To succeed in this role, we suggest applicants possess the following skills:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends 
  • Ability to consistently check in with the Local Organizing Coordinator at least weekly. 
  • Strong commitment to social justice and the labor movement 
  • Written and verbal communication skills, such as: 
  • Empathic listener
  • Persuasive Speaker/Strong Presentation Skills
  • Proven adaptability to differing cultural environments
  • Enjoy working as a team member as well as independently
  • Proficient with technology, including but not limited to Discord, Word, Zoom, Excel, email, text messaging, OpaVote, Google Docs, Canva Pro, and ActionBuilder, or the ability and willingness to learn these platforms 
  • Ability to work as a team member, as well as take individual initiative with minimal supervision
  • Driver’s license and reliable access to a car or public transportation 
  • Previous union and/or community organizing experience 
  • Skills in supporting leadership development 
  • Some understanding of legislative or policy advocacy 

Priority consideration will be given to applicants who possess the following skills:

  • Basic knowledge of labor laws and union organizing efforts in Utah 
  • Previous experience organizing workers in Higher Education. 
  • Knowledge of higher ed financial systems and governance, or willingness to learn
  • Fluency in Spanish 

Compensation:
This position has a starting rate of $25 an hour, for no more than 20 hours per week. Benefits could include PTO/ Sick time, depending on your hours per week and 7765’s Central Committee’s determination/ approval.
