Communications Specialist

The Motion Picture Editors Guild (MPEG) is a national labor organization currently representing over 7,800 freelance and staff post-production professionals that are located across the country. Ours is the world's premier craft guild that sets the standards for excellence in the post-production industry.
MPEG negotiates new collective bargaining agreements (union contracts) and enforces existing agreements with employers involved in post-production. We help with securing better conditions, including but not limited to financial (better pay), medical (better health insurance), safety (turnaround time), and artistic concerns (assignment of credit).
The Guild is seeking a talented Communications Specialist to administer our social media accounts and assist with online and print publications. This position is located in Los Angeles. You will be responsible for creating original text and video content, managing posts and responding to followers. We expect you to be up-to-date with the latest digital technologies and social-media trends. You should have excellent communication skills and be able to express our union’s mission creatively. Ultimately, you should be able to handle our social media presence ensuring high levels of web traffic and user engagement.
In addition to the social media aspects, you will be assigned work from time to time to assist the Communications Director with our print and web magazine and with email and other internal communications from the executive staff to the membership, as needed. We are looking for an innovator. We are seeking someone who understands the different ways we communicate on the different platforms and their respective social paradigms.
This individual will discover what social issues the Guild is trying to solve and then present a social media campaign that is both relevant and engaging. They will also have a more accurate thumb on the pulse of what the members are talking about and how they are doing it. We need someone to keep the conversation going and be able to dynamically flow with the ever-evolving social paradigm.
This position will report to our Director of Communications.
Compensation: This is a non-exempt position. The salary range is $32.97 – $38.46 per hour for a 35-hour work, an annual salary range of $60,000 - $70,000 and will be commensurate with experience. Compensation includes excellent health and retirement benefits through the Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Plans.

Social Media Strategy & Execution – Daily
- Design, implement, and manage a comprehensive social media strategy aligned with the Guild’s goals.
- Generate, edit, publish, and share engaging daily content (text, photos, videos, and news).
- Communicate with followers, respond to questions and messages promptly, and monitor member and public sentiment across platforms.
- Stay up to date with evolving social media trends, tools, and technologies.
- Utilize basic graphic design and video editing tools such as Canva, Photoshop, Lightroom, and CapCut.
Editorial & Communications Support – Weekly to Quarterly
- Assist the Communications Director with editorial projects, including our print and web magazine CineMontage*, and other internal communications such as emails from executive staff.
- Maintain a broad understanding of editorial workflows, including the basics of WordPress and content management for blog-style websites.
Email & Web Support – As Needed
- Support Guild email communication efforts using MailChimp.
- Assist with CMS website updates; prior CMS experience is a plus but not required.
Additional Responsibilities
- Perform research on benchmark trends and audience behavior (quarterly).
- Suggest and implement new features that enhance visibility of Guild activities, union initiatives, and our role within the entertainment industry (occasional).
- Oversee visual consistency across social media account designs (rare updates).
Qualifications
- Experience developing and managing social media campaigns.
- Strong writing, editing, and digital storytelling skills.
- Familiarity with common design and video editing tools (Canva, Photoshop, Lightroom, CapCut).
- Basic understanding of WordPress, blog content management, and digital publishing.
- Experience with email marketing platforms (MailChimp preferred).
- Knowledge of CMS platforms is a plus.
- Ability to stay organized, responsive, and collaborative in a fast-moving environment.
- Interest in union communications, entertainment industry labor, or advocacy is highly valued.
- Solid knowledge of SEO, keyword research and Google Analytics
- Hands-on experience in content management
- Knowledge of online marketing channels
- Familiarity with web design and print production
- Excellent communication skills
- Analytical and multitasking skills
- BA degree in marketing, journalism, communications or related field
- Previous experience working with a union plus
- Ability to create short promo clips desired
