NYC Organizer
Based in New York City, NY
Housing Justice for All and the NYS Tenant Bloc are seeking a NYC Organizer to lead organizing in New York City to advance our North Star of housing for people and not for profit through campaigns that expand rent stabilization and social housing. Housing Justice for All and the NYS Tenant Bloc are separate organizations with separate purposes that share staff who advance a shared goal of building tenant power in New York State.
Responsibilities
- 40% Develop tenant leaders and training programs to empower tenants to organize their buildings/portfolios/blocks/neighborhoods in support of their building’s demands and our north star
- 20% Coordinate tenants and tenant organizations across the city to bargain collectively with their landlords to enforce a rent freeze, win repairs, and pursue tenant takeovers
- 20% Build and execute issue and electoral field programs that engage thousands of tenants
- 10% Support coordinating NYC organizations towards HJ4A’s legislative priorities
- 10% Participate in overall coalition organizing and institution building including grassroots fundraising
Skills and Requirements
- Experience developing organizing relationships, managing volunteers, and leading trainings
- Background in tenant, labor, or electoral organizing
- Familiarity with organizing digital tools
- Willingness to experiment with different organizing styles and tactics
- Reside in New York City
- Regular evening and weekend work. The NYC Organizer is eligible for comp time in accordance with HJ4A’s comp time policy.
- Preferred: Spanish fluency
Salary and Benefits
- $85,000 plus a robust benefits package, subject to negotiation and commensurate with experience.
