Internal Organizer

Based in Wallingford, CT

 

The Internal Organizer represents CHCA District 1199, NUHHCE union members at private sector facilities and public sector municipalities, and Boards of Education. Key responsibilities include internal organizing activities, legislative and community actions, member training & development and contract negotiations, working with union leaders at all levels to achieve organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategies to engage union members in activities that enhance the union's capacity, including internal communication and member mobilization.
  • Recruit and train union stewards to assist members with job-related issues through contract enforcement and direct action.
  • Serve as the lead negotiator for bargaining contracts for assigned locals.
  • Act as a liaison with local unions on CHCA's political and legislative programs, recruiting members for political action and lobbying.
  • Train local union leadership to conduct effective meetings, manage finances, and maintain good communication.
  • Prepare and present grievance and arbitration cases as the union's principal advocate.
  • Oversee member sign-up and orientation programs.
  • Coordinate with the CHCA District 1199 Executive Secretary to prepare communication materials for members.

Supervisory and Collaborative Relationships:
The Internal Organizer reports to the President of CHCA District 1199 and collaborates extensively with other organizers, staff, union officers, members, facility and municipal personnel, and other stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Ability to work with diverse professionals at various career stages.
  • Strong written, verbal, and digital communication skills.
  • Knowledge of contracts, labor law, pension, and healthcare regulations.
  • Strong listening skills, judgment, and issue framing abilities.
  • Research, information gathering, and communication skills.
  • Persuasive argumentation in various settings.
  • Advocacy and negotiation skills, both formal and informal.
  • Planning and organizing abilities for individual, team, and coalition settings.
  • Judgment and problem-solving skills, including activity prioritization.
  • Efficient time management to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to motivate and develop leadership skills in others.
  • Dedication to workers’ rights.
  • Knowledge of organized labor and political/economic issues.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work with a diverse membership and strong member leaders.

Experience and Training:

  • Three years of experience as a union or community organizer, or other relevant experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and an insured automobile in good condition.
  • College degree preferred.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.

Compensation:
Starting salary is $72,000 to $74,000 per year, with a generous time off policy, health benefits, and pension. This is a full-time, salaried, overtime-exempt position.
