Communications Director

Summary
SEIU6 Property Services NW is seeking a creative and collaborative Communications Director to lead our member-driven communications team and to steer communications strategy.
This position is responsible for all SEIU6 print publications and digital properties and takes a leading role in telling the story of SEIU6 to union members and the world. Strong traditional and digital media skills are necessary, along with a penchant for telling stories that connect individual struggles with collective solutions. As a language- diverse union, language skills in Amharic, Chinese, Somali, Spanish, or Vietnamese would be particularly useful, and/or a commitment to implementing principles of language justice across union communications.
The communications director must be able to build relationships with a highly diverse workforce, to develop and amplify worker voices, and to lead a training program in digital media for union members.
This position supports the president in executive communications and takes a leading role in digital and media strategy for campaigns. Strategic thinking as well as attention to detail are desired. Top candidates will have the desire to fight not only for the economic interests of the working class, but for equity at the intersections of race, gender, immigration status, the environment, and the future of work.

SEIU6 is a labor union representing over 10,000 janitors, security officers, airport, stadium, and allied industry workers in Washington State. SEIU6 is a highly diverse local union with members from Washington and all over the world, and over 30 languages spoken. Through organizing and collective power, SEIU6 members raise standards for working families at the worksite and beyond.
Job Responsibilities
- Digital campaign strategy
- Media strategy
- Team leadership
- Create digital content including short form video
- Design print communications including newsletters and flyers
- Conduct trainings on digital tools for member communications team
- Write press releases, news stories, factsheets, and speeches
- Collaborate in producing events including actions, delegations, and rallies
- Take high-quality photographs at union meetings and events
- Train members in public speaking and digital communications
- Conduct media outreach, including maintaining working relationships with journalists and generating media coverage
- Collaborate with members, organizers, staff, and community groups to develop communications messaging and strategy
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Highly developed writing skills and ability to write engaging copy for general audience
- Social media content production and management
- Familiarity with contemporary digital best practices with an eye on new modes of engagement
- Document design
- Video production
- Training design and facilitation
- Demonstrated ability to exercise a high level of judgment
- Ability to work independently without supervision and collaboratively as part of a team
- Experience in building strong working relationships
- Background in writing, design, journalism, social justice, education, communications, or related field
- Strong personal commitment to racial equity; experience applying a racial equity lens to campaign development is desired
- Experience working alongside communities of color and/or immigrant and refugee communities is preferred
- Driver’s license and car (with insurance) required
- Fluency in a language other than English is preferred, especially Amharic, Chinese, Somali, Spanish, or Vietnamese
Compensation
Salary range is $100,000 – $120,000 DOE. Excellent benefits including 100% employer-paid, full family health insurance; dental; vision; pension; and car allowance.
