Political Organizer

Based in Silver Spring, MD

National Nurses United (NNU), the nation’s largest nurses union, seeks an experienced Political Organizer to execute its federal political program, which includes on-the-ground political campaigns for nurses' values candidates and building nurse members’ political leadership and skills.

NNU leads the Registered Nurse movement to transform the market-driven healthcare industry in the United States into a health care system driven by patient needs. NNU has negotiated the best Registered Nurse collective bargaining contracts in the nation and provided critical leadership in the labor and social justice movements on multiple issues, including Medicare for All, health and safety protections for health care workers, progressive taxation, environmental justice and climate change, and labor law reform. NNU’s political program is rooted in our theory of change and seeks to support candidates who are committed to our organizing and health care priorities.

The open Political Organizer position will work in the Government Relations department under the direction of the Political Director and the National Political Campaigns Director and will be based in the Silver Spring, MD office. This position will require significant travel throughout the country.

The Political Organizer’s primary focus will be to advance our union’s objectives through federal political and member skills-building programs. This work includes:

  1. Growing the federal political program through PAC fundraising;
  2. Build, plan, and execute direct voter contact work for NNU-endorsed candidates through door-knocking, phone banking, and other voter engagement tactics;
  3. Oversee and help execute the political power-building program for nurse members;
  4. Recruit and develop member leaders as they become political activists and leaders;
  5. Prepare event agendas and other communication tools such as fliers and talking points;
  6. Track and assess key federal level races across the country;
  7. Identify and build relationships with community and labor allies on our political priorities;
  8. Create and implement community outreach plans for political events; and
  9. Support lobby visits between members and members of Congress and other priority work of the federal legislative team.

Requirements: 

  • 3+ years combined experience working professionally in a union and on political campaigns
  • Experience using voter databases and/or digital technology and tools for campaigns
  • Demonstrated ability to independently execute campaigns 
  • Demonstrated success in political organizing and campaign work 
  • Highly developed communication skills 
  • Highly developed written and analytical skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with allied organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team
  • Ability to execute political judgement
  • Ability to travel and spend weekends on the ground overseeing political campaigns
  • Candidates with advocacy experience on health care policy, and/or experience in direct member-to-member organizing encouraged to apply 
  • Bachelor’s degree

Competitive salary of $106,000 to $138,000 dependent on skills and experience. Generous benefits package, including comprehensive family and domestic partner health and dental plans, and a generous pension.
