Reclaim Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Tenants Union are seeking a candidate who wants to understand how landlord power operates in Rhode Island and Southern New England in order to fight back most effectively through the activity of a mass base of organized tenants. The Strategic Campaigner will join a team of fun and hardworking organizers, and an organization that spends every day fighting to better the lives of tenants in Rhode Island.
The Strategic Campaigner will participate in extensive training and skills-building workshops that will equip them to research and analyze companies and the real estate industry as a whole, as well as develop effective strategy and tactics for tenants to fight back. The candidate does not need research experience, but should have a strong understanding of power and ability to analyze relationships, and should have experience in community, labor, or tenant organizing. Spanish and/or Portuguese and/or Cape Verdean Creole preferred. While the role will require a significant amount of computer work, the Strategic Campaigner will be integrated into the organizing team and should be comfortable communicating with member tenants, community leaders, and elected officials. Flexibility is required for evening and weekend work when needed.
The Strategic Campaigner will be part of a small cohort of individuals receiving training and will receive regular feedback and evaluation. They will have an organizing partner from the field team, will be supervised by RITU’s Organizing Director, and will have a mentor and multiple trainers. The position is intended to be one year, pending evaluation, with the possibility of renewal into the future.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducting strategic research and analysis of key corporate, nonprofit, and institutional actors, companies, political figures and industries, among others;
- Developing and implementing strategies and tactics in consultation with campaign teams;
- Writing letters, public records requests, memos, reports, white papers, and other documents as needed;
- Creating campaign messaging documents working with impacted leaders, organizers, communication staff, and campaign coordinators;
- Helping coordinate campaign strategies in consultation with directors and organizers;
- Developing and maintaining comprehensive campaign planning and tracking documents;
- Planning, developing materials for, and executing activities including delegations, rallies, meetings, protests, and direct actions as part of campaign teams
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated alignment with the mission and values of Reclaim / Rhode Island Tenants Union, including a commitment to working-class empowerment and social justice.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write compelling materials for various audiences
- Proficiency in data analysis and the ability to measure campaign impact.
- Creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with the specific cause or issue being campaigned for.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build effective relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds, identities, and life experiences.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, as needed to meet goals.
- Ability to work on several different projects that are both long and short-term, planning, prioritizing, and shifting as needed within a rapidly changing environment.
- Appreciation for feedback and discussion in an environment focused on achieving both individual learning and collective impact.
- Willingness to travel and conduct in-person outreach at worksites, community spaces, and individual residences.
Compensation:
The salary range for this position is $50,000 – $60,000 based on experience and qualifications. Full-time employees are eligible for a range of benefits including PTO; Family & Medical Leave; Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverages; and retirement options.
