The ideal candidate combines strong technical skills with a passion for the labor movement and an understanding of how to create content that resonates across digital and social platforms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Video Production

  • Develop and produce engaging video content from concept to completion, including short-form social media clips, event coverage, member testimonials, news recaps, direct-to-camera recordings, and longer-form produced pieces.
  • Serve as a one-person production unit when needed—brainstorming, storyboarding, writing, researching, lighting, recording audio, shooting, and editing video content.
  • Conduct on-camera interviews with union leaders, elected officials, policy experts, and rank-and-file postal workers at rallies, conventions, picket lines, and other events.
  • Manage all aspects of post-production, including footage ingestion, rough cuts, color correction, sound design, graphics integration, and final delivery across multiple formats.
  • Rapidly produce high-quality content in response to breaking news, legislative developments, or campaign priorities.
  • Coordinate with external vendors as necessary to achieve video production goals.

Storytelling & Content Strategy

  • Create compelling, emotionally resonant videos that tell the stories of postal workers and translate complex issues—such as collective bargaining, workplace safety, postal privatization, and workers' rights—into accessible and engaging content.
  • Provide guidance on best practices in video production, digital storytelling, and visual communication.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Director and team to align video content with strategic messaging objectives and integrated campaigns.
  • Collaborate across departments to support integrated campaigns, programs, and events through video and audio storytelling.
  • Identify and pitch video concepts that support APWU's advocacy, membership engagement, and member education goals.
  • Stay current with video trends, platform algorithms, and best practices for TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube, Facebook, and other emerging platforms.

Technical Operations & Asset Management

  • Maintain and operate video production equipment, including cameras, lighting, and audio gear.
  • Manage video file systems, ensuring proper organization, archiving, and backup of footage and project files.
  • Coordinate with the Digital Manager on platform delivery, optimization, and distribution of video content
  • Ensure all video content meets accessibility standards, including captioning and audio descriptions where appropriate.
  • Review and proof all videos for quality, accuracy, brand consistency, and alignment with APWU's voice before final delivery.

Event Coverage

  • Lead on-site video capture at APWU conventions, rallies, legislative events, press conferences, and other union activities.
  • Coordinate pre-event planning and production logistics, including equipment setup, lighting, and audio.
  • Quickly edit and publish event highlights and recap videos to maximize timeliness and audience engagement.
  • Support livestreaming of major events when required.

Qualifications
Required

  • 2–5 years of professional video production experience, including both shooting and editing, in a nonprofit, labor, advocacy, campaign, or media environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to craft compelling visual narratives that resonate across social and digital platforms.
  • Strong scriptwriting skills with the ability to distill complex policy issues into accessible, emotionally compelling content.
  • Experience operating as a one-person production unit when needed: shooting, recording sound, and editing independently in dynamic environments.
  • Excellent understanding of social media platforms and best practices for video content, including aspect ratios, runtimes, and platform-specific optimization.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to incorporate feedback constructively.
