Grievance and Training Specialist

The Michigan Corrections Organization (MCO) SEIU Local 526M represents approximately 5,500 Corrections Officers and Forensic Security Assistants throughout Michigan.
MCO is looking for an organized individual with attention to detail. Qualified applicants must be willing to work long and unusual hours if needed. The Grievance and Training Specialist is responsible for managing all aspects of processing grievances and the initial and ongoing training of all chapter officials and stewards. The Grievance and Training Specialist will work closely with the Legal Department and the facility chapters as well as the Grievance Committee and the Executive Board on appeals. The Grievance and Training Specialist will also be responsible for providing administrative support to all staff and departments when needed.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Manage, execute and support all aspects of processing grievances;
- Maintain and update the grievance database and files throughout the grievance process;
- Schedule, copy and distribute materials for grievance committee meetings and board appeals;
- Effectively support the preparation and execution of arbitrations;
- Attend Grievance Committee meetings and Executive Board appeals meetings and record action taken on each grievance;
- Prepare and disseminate Grievance Committee and Executive Board appeal letters;
- Run various reports such as grievance, arbitration, executive board and committee reports;
- Support contract negotiations and campaigns as necessary;
- Maintain accurate records of member and employer contact;
- Work with the Executive Director and union leadership to recognize grievance patterns and develop a strategy for response;
- Provide administrative support to all staff and departments;
- Assist with internal organizing as needed;
- Work on special projects assigned by immediate supervisor;
- Maintain filing system for grievances, arbitrations, ULPs, lawsuits, etc.;
- Coordinate with chapter leaders on an ongoing basis;
- Assist with NEO presentations as needed;
- Train chapter leaders through the grievance process and organizational duties;
- Experience with Union software / databases;
- And all other duties as assigned.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Have experience with a Union and their operations;
- Knowledge and understanding of collective bargaining;
- Must have experience working with public safety employees;
- Ability to manage and prioritize work, subject to dynamic deadlines;
- Strong listening and communication skills in order to work with diverse members who are presenting workplace issues;
- Proficient using Microsoft programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook;
- Experience with Union software / databases;
- Excellent organizational skills;
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment to advance the goals of the Union and its members;
- Thorough knowledge of MCO, its goals, strategies, and structure;
- Preferred in-depth knowledge of chapter operations;
- Ability to train and connect with chapter officials;
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with internal departments and leadership;
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously;
- Comfortable with public speaking;
- Must have experience speaking to audiences of 50 to 150 people;
- Must have created and implemented a training plan or event;
- Ability to work with members employed inside various prisons at different security levels.
Wages are controlled by a Collective Bargaining Agreement starting at $49,836.80.
