About Us
AFT Indiana is a statewide federation of local teacher unions. We support our affiliates with resources, training, advocacy, and coordination to strengthen collective bargaining and defend public education.

Position Summary
We are seeking a dependable, trustworthy, and organized Administrative Assistant to support the daily operations of our small office. This role is central to keeping our federation running smoothly and serving as a reliable resource for our members.

The administrative assistant will provide administrative, clerical, and organizational support to ensure the efficient operation of AFT Indiana’s office and its mission of representing educators across the state. The administrative assistant will handle routine office functions, support union officers and staff, and assist with communications, events, and records management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first point of contact for members, affiliates, and the public (phone, email, in person).
  • Maintain records, including dues records and contact lists.
  • Draft and format correspondence, newsletters, flyers, and other communications as directed by the state President and professional staff.
  • Assist with scheduling, meeting logistics, and preparing materials.
  • Maintain organized files (digital and paper).
  • Support union events, trainings, and statewide conferences.
  • Financial and bookkeeping matters. Receive and process member dues, office bills using QuickBooks Online (QBO).
  • Provide administrative support to officers, staff, and committees.

Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal, written and analytical skills;
  • Positive attitude and excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Professional, courteous and tactful;
  • Demonstrated proficiency of Windows XP, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Microsoft Access, QuickBooks Online, and Google;
  • Excellent proof-reading ability;
  • Strong writing skills related to correspondence;
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments and meet competing deadlines;
  • Ability to work well within a team;
  • Demonstrated work performance as a self-starter and detail oriented;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and experience identifying problems and finding potential solutions;
  • Knowledge of public education and the labor movement is preferred but not required.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: starting at $25.00 – $27.00 
  • Benefits: Paid time off, Federal Holidays off, reimbursement towards health insurance. Contribution to a Simplified Employee Pension plan (SEP) after first year of employment.
