Digital Communications Specialist

Based out of St. Paul, MN

POSITION TITLE: Digital Communications Specialist

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Digital Communications Specialist plays a key role in advancing the mission, values, and priorities of the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) by amplifying the collective voice of nurses through strong, strategic digital communications. This position provides professional and technical expertise to shape clear, values driven messaging across MNA’s digital platforms, with primary responsibility for the MNA’s social media and web presence. The Digital Communications Specialist focuses on building, mobilizing, and engaging MNA’s online community, expanding audience reach across digital channels, and using data and insights to strengthen advocacy, organizing, and strategic efforts. They plan, implement, and evaluate MNA’s digital communications initiatives to support nurses, patient safety, and worker power. This position works collaboratively as an active member of a communications team alongside three other specialists representing diverse communications disciplines and the Director of Public Affairs.

Primary Job Duties:

  • Coordinating, planning, and developing content for MNA’s digital properties, with a particular focus aimed toward increasing growth and engagement on MNA’s social media platforms
  • Working with the communications team and other departments to plan, produce, and disseminate video, meme and other content for social media channels including bargaining campaigns, electoral politics, legislative issues, nursing practice issues and field organizing
  • Recruiting and supporting MNA members to post, repost, and amplify MNA social media content
  • Operating MNA’s social media accounts to engage and grow online communities, including day-to-day execution, community management, and monitoring, and ensuring message consistency across multiple social media platforms
  • Creating paid social media efforts, including audience targeting, creative development, and placement
  • Utilizing reporting tools like Facebook Insights, Google Analytics, and other data analysis tools to provide strategic reports and direction that optimize MNA’s social media efforts
  • Coordinating Search Engine Optimization (SEO) efforts, Search Engine Marketing (SEM) campaigns, Google Analytics, and Google AdWords
  • Working knowledge of and experience with integrating traditional media and communications with digital communications efforts and digital media emerging tools
  • Coordinating and maintaining MNA’s social media presence on member pages
  • Researching and evaluating new relevant social media channels and their impact, to inform MNA of the most effective use of digital technology
  • Providing best practices and training on digital organizing and communication for members and staff
  • Implementing digital education programs that build member and staff knowledge
  • Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite tools
  • Website design, using HTML and Content Management Systems (CMS)
  • Basic website editing in Elementor and WordPress, utilizing CSS and JavaScript as needed

Secondary Job Duties:

  • Serve as videographer and photographer at MNA events, as needed
  • Write and edit clear and persuasive content for various audiences and formats, including but not limited to speeches, blogs, newsletters, and press releases 
  • Assist with messaging development and overall communications strategy 
  • Serve as backup for other members of the Communication team on internal and external communications, public relations, and graphics
  • Working in collaboration with other departments during contract negotiations, elections, campaigns, and other key organizational goals
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, or other relevant area of study and
  • At least five (5) years as a Communications professional
  • At least three (3) years in Digital Communications, including content management and social media platforms

OR 

  • a combination of education and experience that demonstrates an applicant’s knowledge of digital communications and organizing.

AND a combination of the following

  • Demonstrated experience in additional communications disciplines such as graphics, media relations, and internal communications
  • Experience developing and executing integrated communications campaigns that align with broad organizational campaigns
  • Ability to utilize digital organizing techniques to enhance member participation
  • Demonstrated experience in creating and placing digital ad campaigns on various social media platforms
  • Working knowledge of content management systems, email advocacy platforms, media monitoring programs, and analytics tools.
  • Understanding of various roles within a labor union including but not limited to external organizing, legislative advocacy, contract enforcement, and external organizing 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across departments, including labor relations, organizing and political teams
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in labor unions, nursing, healthcare, or non-profits

Work/life balance is prioritized, but the ability to work weekends, irregular hours, and travel may be required. Transportation is required.

SALARY: Per MNASO Local 1, Unit 2 Contract Agreement. A salary range of $89,814 –105,082, dependent on experience, with generous benefits including defined benefit pension, 401K matching, 100% employer-paid single and low-cost family health insurance coverage, 20 vacation, 12 sick, and 3 personal days, along with 12 paid holidays annually.
