Starting Salary: $100,000+ (depending upon experience)

UFCW Local 663 is a union of 14,000 hard-working grocery, retail, meat packing and processing, food preparation and manufacturing, healthcare, and other workers in Minnesota. Local 663 is part of the 1.2 million member United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.

JOB SUMMARY: 
We are seeking a highly motivated Attorney to join our team to assist and advise on legal issues relating to labor law and contract negotiations. In addition to strong academic credentials, excellent writing, and effective oral advocacy skills, candidates must share our commitment to the labor movement and workers’ rights. The right person for this position must be a team player with collaborative interpersonal skills and display proven ability to thrive in an environment with frequently shifting priorities. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the President and Secretary-Treasurer in collective bargaining agreement negotiations, including drafting proposals and contract language and representing the Local in negotiations;
  • Represent workers in mediation, arbitration, labor board hearings/matters before the National Labor Relations Board (e.g. representation petitions, DFR, Unfair Labor Practice charges);
  • Review and/or draft documents including: settlement agreements, policies/procedures, resignation agreements, last chance agreements, memorandum of understanding, collective bargaining agreements and worker communications (e.g. flyers, newsletters, text scripts)
  • Serve as a resource to staff and members for legal and legislative issues, trends in bargaining, and other matters related to terms and conditions of employment;
  • Participate in Leadership Team meetings and planning;
  • Other duties as assigned.

DIRECTIONS AND DECISION MAKING:
This position reports primarily to UFCW Local 663 President and Secretary-Treasurer on a regular basis and will be expected to keep them regularly updated. This position requires self-accountability, independent decision making, ability to think on your feet and prioritize issues. Physical location of position is at the discretion of the President.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must live in, or be willing to move to, Metro Area of the Twin Cities in Minnesota;
  • Strong commitment to social justice and building the labor movement;
  • Legal research and writing;
  • Experience and training necessary to enforce and conduct contract negotiations;
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in complex situations;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Ability to make decisions and pivot quickly and fluidly, think practically in solutions-oriented manner;
  • Strong analytical capabilities and judgment;
  • Ability to work well with a wide variety of people;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills; 
  • Thorough knowledge of MS-Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Google Drive and Applications (e.g. Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail); 
  • Ability to work variable hours; and
  • Must have reliable transportation.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school required;
  • Entry Level to 5 years of experience in litigation, labor, alternative dispute resolution, or related; and
  • Must be licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Minnesota, pending admission to the Minnesota Bar or willing to apply and successfully be admitted to the Minnesota Bar. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of union organizing and representation practices and principles;
  • Knowledge of anti-union employer tactics; and
  • General knowledge of the roles and duties of union officers and staff and understanding of union values.
