SEIU 1199NE is seeking a Communications Specialist focused on Design & Content to help shape how our union looks, feels, and speaks across digital platforms, print, live actions, and organizing campaigns. In this role, the ideal candidate understands that design is not just about making things that look “nice”. It is about creating work that helps people understand why they should care and moves them to action. This is a rare opportunity for someone who wants to make things that matter and help shape movement design at scale.

Hybrid position with one remote day per week, primarily based out of our Hartford, CT office, with periodic travel to our Providence, RI office.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Competitive salary starting at $61,500 per year (salary increase July 1, 2026 – starting at $63,037.50) with higher compensation negotiable based on experience and qualifications
  • Employer-paid health insurance options with no premium
  • Pension plan
  • Paid vacation, sick time, and holidays
  • Mileage and vehicle reimbursement for work-related travel
  • Hybrid work flexibility (1 day per week remote)
  • Opportunity to help shape one of the largest healthcare unions in New England during a major period of growth and digital transformation

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Influence creative design across social media, campaign graphics, flyers, posters, newsletters, websites, and digital communications.
  • Support photography, short-form video production, and visual content creation for digital campaigns and organizing efforts.
  • Support organizing, political, and public campaigns through strong visual storytelling.
  • Help shape and maintain visual standards as part of a broader organizational rebrand.
  • Collaborate with organizers, members, leadership, and communications staff.
  • Design for rallies, strikes, press conferences, and major union actions.
  • Support member storytelling for testimony, public speaking, media, and digital campaigns.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Commitment to worker power and social justice.
  • Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite or similar tools.
  • Strong visual storytelling instincts and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple fast-moving projects and deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across cultures and communities.
  • Experience with platforms like Action Network, Buffer, Hootsuite, or similar tools preferred.
  • Bilingual, including in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Portuguese preferred but not required.

PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS
Please submit 10–15 samples of design and content work including posters, branding systems, social graphics, digital campaigns, print materials, motion, photography, video, or organizing-related creative. We are especially interested in work that demonstrates strong visual storytelling, clarity, urgency, and point of view. Published work is welcome, but unpublished work, process work, rough concepts, drafts, and creative development materials are equally valuable to us. We want to understand how you think, not just what the final piece looked like. Whenever possible, include examples that show the evolution of a project from early idea through final execution.

Experience creating work connected to movements, advocacy, labor, culture, or community organizing is strongly encouraged.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS
Design doesn’t just reflect change. It creates the conditions for it.

From the wheat-pasted posters of the Paris student uprisings of 1968 to the hand-lettered signs of the Civil Rights Movement, design has always spoken in symbols, colors, type, and urgency long before speeches ever begin.

At SEIU 1199NE, we are investing in a major organizational rebrand and a more sophisticated creative strategy because healthcare workers deserve communications that match the courage, clarity, and power of the fights they are leading every day.

ABOUT 1199NE
In these challenging times, when so much wealth and power is concentrated in the hands of so few, it is more important than ever to unite working people with the broader political and social justice movement to win respect, dignity, economic justice, and racial equality on the job and in our communities.

SEIU 1199 New England is a democratic healthcare workers union rooted in the day-to-day fights of caregivers across Connecticut and Rhode Island. In recent years, members have won through militant direct action, a $20/hour standard for thousands of low-wage healthcare workers, taken on racism in the workplace, fought for progressive policy in state legislatures, and built the kind of worker power that changes workplaces, industries, and communities.

As a proud local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), one of the largest and most powerful labor organizations in the country, we are part of a 2-million-member movement united by the belief in the dignity and worth of workers.
