Organizing & Bargaining Strategies Department

 

The UAW has taken an all-new approach to bargaining and striking. During our most recent negotiations with Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, our union ran a contract campaign for the first time, initiated strikes against all three companies at the same time and brought a whole new level of transparency to bargaining. The result was record-breaking contracts.

Our union has created a Department of Bargaining Strategies to build on our success and expand the model used in Big Three bargaining to all areas of our union. The UAW is seeking an experienced candidate with a history of successfully planning and leading contract campaigns, utilizing high-participation approaches to bargaining, and using offensive bargaining techniques.

Candidates must be willing to work long and irregular hours and to travel as needed with overnight stays.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the leadership of the Bargaining Strategies department to align work with departmental and campaign goals.
  • Act as liaison to local unions for the purposes of achieving, maintaining and sustaining communication between local unions (including its various units), Regions and the UAW International (and its various departments);
  • Coordinate with staff and members across the union to lead development and implementation of contract campaign plans;
  • Implement contract campaigns and strategies in alignment with the union’s high engagement model;
  • Mentoring and coaching bargaining teams and providing workers with the skills and resources they need to overcome fierce opposition from employers.
  • Support staff, locals, and units in contract negotiations: including developing and drafting demands,
  • Analyze and draft contract language, initial proposals, and counterproposals;
  • Support staff, locals, and units to engage members, organize membership mobilizations, and implement campaign strategies;
  • Develop and utilize campaign metrics to assess campaigns and provide strategic guidance to staff and leadership;
  • Develop and conduct training of union stewards, delegates, officers and bargaining committee representatives, and union staff; working with Regional Education, CAP and other representatives as needed;
  • Participate in departmental priorities including organizing, strike assistance, and political and legislative advocacy campaigns
  • Lead and facilitate meetings.
  • Participate in ongoing internal UAW training.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Three years minimum experience leading contract campaigns, bargaining, and strikes.
  • High proficiency in developing strategic plans and communicating them to staff and union leaders.
  • Aptitude for developing staff and fostering strong teams.
  • Strong familiarity with labor law.
  • Ability to develop campaign communications materials.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, and manage time and priorities is a necessity.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop campaign communications materials.
  • An unwavering commitment to building a fighting, member-led union.
  • Collective bargaining experience and understanding of offensive bargaining techniques.
  • Significant experience organizing membership mobilizations.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Highly Organized, ability to multi-task with strong time-management skills.
  • Expert interpersonal skills.
  • Risk management experience.
  • Ability to efficiently manage and lead projects with strong attention to detail.
  • Open to receiving feedback and learning new organizing skills and approaches
  • An unwavering commitment to building a fighting, member-led union.
  • Prior experience executing strikes is highly preferred.
  • Basic understanding or proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, Forms) and social media and media outreach to supervise and direct such work
  • Preference given to UAW members in continuous good standing of the International Union for a period of (1) year, pursuant to Article 14, section 3 of the UAW Constitution
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
The UAW offers a competitive starting salary of $118, 566.67 along with best-in-class health, retirement, and paid time off benefits. This is a full-time position represented by the UAW Staff Council. Relocation may be available.
