Peralta Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 1603 Staff/Organizer Position

The Peralta Federation of Teachers (PFT) are seeking a Staff/Organizer to support internal organizing at all Peralta Colleges and assist with administrative duties to balance our current staff. PFT is affiliated with the CFT, AFT, and AFL-CIO. PFT Represents ~1,000 faculty members at the PCCD community colleges. We represent both full-time and part-time faculty members including instructors, nurses, librarians, counselors, and mental health specialists. We are a member-led organization with close ties to the Alameda Labor Council and CFT. 

We are looking for the following: 

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Public employee organizing experience 
  • Membership recruitment, education, engagement, and mobilization skills 
  • Experience in community, student, labor, or environmental activism, or working on campaigns and elections 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and motivate members 
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Understanding of the California Community College system. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the recruitment of new members and organization of membership drives (class visits, phone calls, house visits);
  • Support in the development and execution of organizing campaigns including, but not limited to, contract campaigns, impact bargaining, and class cancellations; 
  • Work with membership and/or staff to develop and oversee PFT social media operations; 
  • Assist with the creation of video content; 
  • Coordinate with PFT staff to oversee onboarding of new faculty hires; 
  • Work with PFT office staff on an ongoing basis to update databases, spreadsheets, lists and numbers for reporting and organizing purposes; 
  • Train and coach member leaders and support in the building and maintenance of member committees; 
  • Assist in GOTV and related political activities including PFT-COPE membership campaigns; 
  • Attend conferences, conventions, and trainings as directed by the President and the PFT Executive Council; 
  • Other duties as directed by the President 

We are looking for someone to work 75% (30 hrs per week). Gross salary range is from $6100 to $7800 per month, depending on qualifications and experience, plus full employee fringe benefit package including health, dental, and vision plans, as well as a retirement program (starting in the second year if renewed).
